FPA completed a Concept Development Study and Preliminary Engineering for the improvements to approximately 2/3 mile of CR 520 in Middletown Township. The project included completion of a detailed traffic count program and traffic analysis for various alternatives to develop a comprehensive plan to improve traffic operations, pedestrian and bicycle compatibility, and access modifications along the corridor.
FPA developed conceptual plans for multiple alternatives, including road diets, roundabouts, and traditional signalized intersections, and ultimately recommended a preliminarily preferred alternative for advancement to preliminary engineering. The recommended alternative included widening of CR 520 to provide an additional travel lane westbound and dedicated right and/or left turn lanes at multiple signalized intersections. Intersection approaches on CR50 and Phalanx Road were also widened to provide additional dedicated turn lanes. 3 traffic signals within the corridor were identified for replacement, with preliminary signal plans and timing directives developed for each, and new sidewalk was proposed in several locations to connect existing segments as a school and park are in close proximity to the project. Multiple commercial driveways in close proximity to each other were either combined to reduce the number of driveways, or turn restrictions implemented. New roadway drainage and stormwater management basins were included as part of the preliminary design.
