The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) retained FPA for the hands-on condition inspection,, Preliminary Engineering, Final Design, preparation of contract documents and services during construction for the complete replacement of bridge decks, bridge seats, backwalls and bridge deck joints; structural steel strengthening and repairs; bearing replacement; substructure concrete spall and crack repairs, and associated approach roadway improvements for the following bridge structures built in 1953 and located on US Route 1 Business in the City of Trenton, Mercer County :
- US Route 1 Business over Delaware & Raritan (D & R) Canal & US Route 1 Southbound (Structure no. 1101-162), an existing 195-foot two span, simply supported, composite, riveted plate girder bridge.
- US Route 1 Business over New York Avenue (Structure no. 1101-163), an existing 76-foot single span, composite rolled steel stringer bridge.
The project included field survey and base mapping, wetlands delineation, subsurface investigation, utility engineering, Preliminary Engineering, Design Exception Report, preliminary and final roadway design, preliminary and final bridge design, traffic engineering and development of construction staging plans, lighting design, drainage design, seismic analysis and retrofit study, bridge structural analysis to determine and strengthen the capacity of existing steel framing to carry proposed loads due to heavier live loading and increased deck thickness, and preparation of contract documents (plans, special provisions, and engineer’s cost estimate). Construction began in August 2016 and services during construction (review of working drawings and RFIs, consultation during construction, attendance at project meetings and site visits, and preparation of Change of Plans and As-builts) are currently being performed by FPA.
