Climate change impacts are typically emphasized with images of wildfires, drought warnings, and violent storms, however, changing weather patterns are causing havoc to 100-year-old “Main Street” infrastructure. In Keansburg Borough and the Township of Hazlet, communities totaling less than 35,000 tucked away in Monmouth County, NJ, significant rain events and full-moon high tides have resulted in flooding issues for Bridge R-12 and County Route 7 (Monroe Avenue) making both impassable, and the inconvenience intolerable.
“During our first site visit, we witnessed flooding at the bridge and at the low point of County Route 7, which is about 350 feet from the bridge,” said French & Parrello’s Discipline Manager, Bridge and Dams, Sarah Steib, PE. “We knew immediately we would have to raise the roadway and improve flow through the bridge opening. But there were also several major challenges to overcome.”
