Bear Swamp Pond Dam
Howell Township retained French & Parrello Associates to prepare plans and specifications for rehabilitation of the dam and spillway structure. A new reinforced concrete spillway was proposed to replace the existing spillway. The weir length was increased from 4-feet to 40-feet to pass the 100-year storm event without the dam overtopping. The existing 36-inch diameter corrugated HDPE pipe was replaced with a precast concrete box culvert. A reinforced concrete apron was installed downstream of the box culvert.
Other site improvements included raising the dam embankment to provide 1-foot of freeboard during the regulatory design storm, placement of riprap for erosion control, installation of two stainless steel sluice gates for drawdown of the pond, installation of an gate operator platform, installation of steel sheet piling cutoffs, and installation of fencing and railings for public safety. The construction was completed by Precise Construction, Inc. based out of Freehold, New Jersey. The finished project resulted in a dam with adequate spillway capacity that meets the requirements of the New Jersey Dam Safety Standards and reduces the risk of the loss of this recreational resource.
This project was the recipient of the 2019 NJ Alliance for Action Distinguished Engineering Award.
