Celebrating Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

Engineering shapes the world around us—from the infrastructure we rely on to the innovations that improve our daily lives. DiscoverE’s Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is all about inspiring young girls to explore careers in STEM and showing them that engineering is a place where they belong.

At French & Parrello Associates (FPA), we believe in fostering the next generation of engineers by sharing our experiences. To celebrate this day, we asked some of our female engineers to reflect on their journeys by responding to one of three prompts:

  • I became an engineer because…
  • If I could give one piece of advice to future engineers, it would be…
  • The best part about being an engineer is…

Their responses highlight the passion, purpose, and wisdom that come with an engineering career. Here’s what they had to say.

If I could give one piece of advice to future engineers, it would be… “Never stop being curious — engineering is all about learning and growing.” ~Alyssa Drosnock

Alyssa is a Senior Saff Engineer in FPA’s Civil/Site department in the Hackettstown, NJ office.

I became an engineer because… “When I walked into the Pantheon for the first time and thought that if these old guys can build this hundreds of years ago and it still stands, I can definitely do something as, if not more, impressive one day.” ~Catherine Rooney

Catherine is a Senior Staff Engineer in the Telecommunications Department at FPA’s HQ in Wall Township, NJ.

I became an engineer because… “I love seeing the change that I brought upon the world.” ~Annika Asplund

Annika is a Project Engineer in FPA’s Civil/Site department in the Hackettstown, NJ office.

I became an engineer because… “In school I wanted to challenge myself with STEM courses and I knew that when I would start my career the work would continue to be challenging but meaningful to me because I would get to see the work come to life.  I like that engineering combines creativity with technical skills because each project requires a unique problem-solving approach.” ~Katherine Kile

Katherine is a Staff Engineer in the Civil/Site Department at FPA’s HQ in Wall Township, NJ.

The best part about being an engineer is... “Being able to come up with different solutions to fix important issues and watch these solutions be completed.” ~Juliana Leone

Juliana is a Senior Staff Engineer in FPA’s Highway/Traffic Department at FPA’s HQ in Wall Township, NJ.

The best part of being an engineer is… “The ability to use your knowledge and skillset to determine solutions to any specific problems that may arise.” ~Ellen Kalnins
