June 8th is World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day is an international day that takes place annually on June 8th. World Ocean Day is used as a reminder of the major role that it has in our lives as humans. World Ocean Day was created in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to celebrate our personal connections to the sea. Through this amazing day, people have been connected worldwide in an effort to achieve the goal of keeping our oceans clean. In the past, thousands of events have been hosted by youth groups, schools, and even businesses.
This year officially marks the 31st anniversary of celebrating World Ocean Day worldwide. Not only have we as humans only studied an incredibly small portion of our oceans, but the oceans also serve as the planet’s “lungs” and are essential to human survival, so keeping them clean is of the utmost important. On this day we highlight our appreciation for our oceans around the world, as well as keeping them clean.
